SOCCER COACHING: MOVES 1 v 1: What priority? & Teaching tips
_____________________________________________________
—- Should learning moves be a priority, when there is so
much to learn? (or, “Why should I or my team care much
about working on soccer moves?”)
Good question. Here is an explanation from Coerver coaches
Alf Galustian and Charlie Cooke…
“When broken down moment by moment, the game of soccer is
largely a series of 1 v 1 moves. In a single professional
match you can expect to find over 200 such occurences.
While the use of moves is not suitable for all 1 v 1
competitions, many opportunities are missed because players
don’t utilise this important skill. As such, we believe
1 v 1 moves should be a crucial part of every player’s
repertoire….
“While 1 v 1 is only one part of the Coerver Coaching
curriculum, it is an important topic to us for several
reasons:
* 1: Players with good 1 v 1 skills can often make the
difference in a game, creating goal chances even though
outnumbered by opponents.
* 2: 1 v 1 drills and games are great ways of improving
speed, stamina and strength.
* 3: Players with good 1 v 1 skills usually develop an
inner-confidence. Confidence can be the vital factor in
players reaching the highest levels of the game.
“It is important to conduct age- and ability-appropriate
sessions. Don’t try to do too much too soon.
“Every practice which teaches full-pressure 1 v 1 attacking
can also be used to teach 1 v 1 defending. The set-up,
action, and rules can all be the same. The only difference
is that the coach should focus on the 1 v 1 defending aspects
and give tips on these.”
[from Galustian and Cooke. Make Your Move. Guilford, CT:
The Lyons Press. 2005. Pp. 3-5, 75.]
Coerver materials include:
—how to perform many specific moves
(initially no pressure, later full pressure)
—when to use each move, and
—where to use each move
—drills which help learning moves
—skills games for full-pressure practice
With these methods, the moves can become second
nature and used spontaneously by the players in
real game situations, at speed, under full pressure
—- Where do Moves 1 v 1 fit into a broader system of learning?
Keep in mind that the Coerver “Pyramid of Player Development”
has 6 levels, the 3rd being “Moves 1 v 1”. But don’t think of
the Pyramid as a ladder where one level must be mastered
before proceeding to the next rung. Instead, each building
block is integral to the others, and can be worked on in
parallel with others. Overall player progress is achieved
as the skills and techniques described within each building
block become stronger.
—- If most players use just a few moves consistently,
why should you be aware of many move types?
From a broader amount of material, you will more quickly
find the right sets of drills and skills that fit your
players, and more to grow with.
Here would be an example of a starting plan for using
the material. At practice, let’s say each player learns well
3 different moves / skills for each of 3 different field
situations (9 total). They will have fun learning them.
Nothing flashy, just effective and fast. Imagine the impact
that would have on your attack. And when defending, they
will be tough to beat because they’ll recognize so many more
moves and have more confidence.
—- Tips for teaching specific moves?
Teaching how to perform specific moves:
Several options, including…
** Demonstration by coach
** Demonstration by another player
** Demonstrate with photos or diagrams,
eg in books or other printed materials
** Use videos (DVDs or VHS)
—at team meetings
—at practice field (e.g. portable DVD player or computer)
—players review videos at home if they have a copy
Best to use a combination of methods
—- Are certain ages more appropriate for working on moves?
Players of all ages and skills levels will improve their
game by working on moves as part of a broad program. The
Coerver coaches recommend that players ages 7 to 15 are
especially important, because at those ages, moves are
learned especially quickly.
—-What are the categories and types of moves and drills
in the Coerver “Make Your Move” DVD set?

not include content of bonuses
