Your Soccer Coaching Philosophy—Take Time to Develop It
Consistent success in soccer relies on many things, including a collection of successful soccer coaching strategies. Those strategies should be as closely aligned as possible with one another, taking into account the specific needs and strengths of the team’s players. Putting those strategies together in a way that makes sense is a product of your soccer coaching philosophy. You may wish to emphasize close controlled play, or a style that includes longer crosses to switch the direction of play frequently, or any of many others.
By starting with the foundation, that is, your overall philosophy, you simplify the task of choosing which soccer coaching strategies make the most sense for different game situations. Those choices then lead to specific drills to develop the skills required for executing those strategies. Your coaching philosophy can include subjective factors such as what concepts you feel are most important, and how you believe the game should be played.
New coaches often do not know quite where to start. Soccer coaching clinics, preferably close to home, can be a tremendous help. The experienced coaches who staff these clinics can provide great insights that assist a new coach in developing their own philosophy.
As part of developing your own approach, consider working towards getting a soccer coaching license along the way. The exposure and learning that goes with licensing courses will make a stronger foundation for any soccer coaching philosophy.
Be sure that there is a strong dose of fun for the players as they learn the elements of your philosophy. Although it is important for them to learn how to compete in sports and in life, they should also be able to enjoy the journey as much as possible.
