Soccer Goalkeeper Camp

One of the most misunderstood and underrated positions on the soccer field is that of the goalkeeper (GK).  The GK is said to be the “last line of defense and the first line of offense.”  If you want to have a winning soccer team, you need a great goalkeeper.  These players aren’t born, they’re made.  And one way to help get strong skills quickly is by attending soccer goalkeeping camp.

Learning basic instincts and reactions are a necessity for the successful goalkeeper.  Proper catching, footwork and diving techniques are important to being effective.  Now, regular practice with the whole team is an important way to help develop these skills and focus in on where work is needed.  However, GK camps will be much more focused on soccer goalkeeper skills than routine daily practice for a whole team.

So, it is a good idea to consider getting the GK’s to a more specialized soccer camp, one which is devoted to keepers.  That can really help improve what needs to be tweaked.  These camps are available widely.  A simple look through the phone book or an Internet search may turn up one or more in your area.

Keeper training camps are usually manned by experienced personnel for focused intensive training.  The individuals working these camps may be pro players in the off season, semi-pro players or coaches.  The idea is that you are getting instruction from someone who knows the material very well.  Think of it as an intensive method to find the weaknesses and strengths in a player’s game and improve them.

These training camps’ schedules vary.  Sometimes there are several consecutive full days.  In others, there are short sessions spread over several weeks.

The initial session (with a coach) at some camps may be complimentary, and used to assess the ability of each student.  The instructor will have the student run through the basics and assess where the help is needed the most.

At the end of the sessions, the students will be assessed again for improvement.  This builds the student’s confidence and self esteem as a player.

If you watch the sports pages of your local newspaper, you might even luck into a training appearance by a well-known player.  Your goalkeeper could then emerge with some instruction from a personal hero as well as an autographed soccer ball or picture.

All in all, soccer goalkeeping camp is a great way to go to help make tougher keepers.  They will find more confidence and be more aggressive on the field.  Goalkeeping abilities will jump ahead faster, and help with the team’s success
